Elmer Appling, 93, Versailles, husband of Norma Jean Appling, died Monday, Nov. 28, 2016. Born March 23, 1923, in Dinuba, Calif., he was the son of the late Fred and Myrtle Patterson Appling. He was a design engineer for Rocketdyne, a member of Versailles Baptist Church, and a veteran of the United States Army and Air Force having served in World War II. He was also the lead engineer in designing the thrust chamber for the Apollo moon rocket. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Paula (Jim) Roberts, Missouri, and Marla Appling (Joe) Lynch and Rhonda Appling Vanwinkle, both of Versailles; nine grandchildren, Jim Roberts, Shannon Roberts Kimsey, Terry Roberts, Aaron Robinett, Caleb Vanwinkle, Michael Appling, Jeana Robinson, Tyler Appling and Ariel Appling; and 12 great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 2, at Clark Funeral Home, Rose Hill, by the Rev. John Brandon. Burial will follow in Fortune Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his grandsons. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Thursday, Dec. 1, at the funeral home.
