Last week, the Sun reported that Woodford Road Engineer Buan Smith was terminated after Fiscal Court met in executive session during a June 19 special meeting. Instead, Judge-Executive John Coyle gave Smith notice of his intent to terminate him 10 days later, pending a hearing on the matter. The final decision on the termination would have come after the June 29 hearing, which Smith could have attended. On June 21, Smith gave Coyle a letter announcing his resignation. Smith told the Sun that while he could have fought the action in the hearing, he resigned because, win or lose, the damage was already done, and he believes the county as a whole doesn’t deserve such a rift in county government.

The Sun regrets the error.
