Whitney Dunlap II, 79, longtime farmer of Springdale Farm, Versailles,
died July 24, 2011.
Vivian S. Doyle, Justin W. Baker and Kelsey S. Taylor each received a
$1,000 scholarship award from the Versailles Kiwanis Club.
Community Trust Bancorp, Inc. reported earnings of $9.0 million, or 59
cents per basic share, compared to $8.6 million, or 56 cents per basic
share, earned during the second quarter of 2010 and $9.3 million, or 61
cents per basic share, earned during the first quarter of 2011.
Kentucky Bank reported a $557,000 increase, a 26 percent increase, in
year to date earnings for 2011 compared to the same time period in 2010.
Former Versailles Elementary School Principal H.V. Stevens, accompanied
by his son-in-law and retired Army veteran, Rick Curtis, recently
visited Washington, D.C., as guests of Honor Flight.
Tiffany Fanter of Versailles was awarded a $1,500 college scholarship
from the Scholarships for Military Children program.
John McDaniel and Jim McDaniel recently received recognition from the
Kentucky Legislature for their contributions to the arts community in
Midway and Woodford County, and were named “Outstanding Citizens.”
Curtis Graham, a 2011 WCHS graduate and one of the top members of the
wrestling team, was awarded the ninth annual Michael Jackson Wrestling
Scholarship on July 21.
Vince Shaw, a senior at WCHS and a goalkeeper for the Yellow Jackets’
soccer team, was selected as the Kentucky Youth Soccer Association 2011
Boys’ Player of the Year.
The Kentucky Rockers 15U-baseball team won the LIDS Bulls Midwest
Championship in Indianapolis the weekend of July 15 and 16. Winning team
members were Zack Barker, Brandon Varble, Wes Walker, Conner Brown, D.J.
Blankenship, and Zachary Durham, J.T. O’Reel, Eli Boggess, Pete O’Nan,
Aaron Ochsenbein, Brandon Smither and Tavis Bingham. Coaches were Kevin
O’Reel and Drew Chism.

David E. Gosnell, 45, of southern Woodford County, was rescued Sunday
morning by county fire department personnel after clinging to a tree
limb while sitting in his small canoe for about 16 hours in the swollen
waters of the Kentucky River.
Mike Flack has been appointed to the Woodford County Planning and Zoning
Commission by Judge-Executive Frank Watts. The vote in fiscal court was
5-1. Flack, a Woodford County resident, is director of operations at
Blue Grass Airport.
Area residents were treated to the sight of about 300 Model T Fords as
they toured Central Kentucky last week.
Mildred Fraley Alves, 90, of Versailles, formerly active in civic,
church work and business, died July 18, at Taylor Manor Nursing Home.
Lindsay Herrera of Versailles swept the girls’ 14 singles and doubles
divisions of the PNC Heartland Junior Classic Tennis Tournament in
Elizabethtown.
Bryan Conway of Frankfort shot a Woodford Hills Country Club course
record 60 in the first round of the L. D. Sweazy Tournament Saturday,
and went on to win the event by seven strokes.

Four new doctors – Sue Leatherman, William E. Childers, C. Dale Goodin,
and Scott Zibell — will begin practice at the Woodford Memorial
Hospital’s family practice center when construction is completed in August.
Woodford Fiscal Court has adopted a state rule which prohibits all types
of electioneering at polling places on election days. Previously, a
local ordinance had permitted electioneering outside a 50-foot perimeter
of the voting place.
The Rev. Ronald Hunter, a Methodist minister from South Wales, is
ministering at the Versailles United Methodist Church until Aug. 19 in
an exchange program.
Congressman Larry J. Hopkins has recommended that Kentucky’s Albert B.
Chandler be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame for his landmark
decisions which ended racial segregation in major league baseball.
Peter Fisher has returned from Cincinnati to his home in Midway after
six weeks with the Greater Cincinnati swimming team.
Milton E. Hollis of Versailles has been promoted to specialist five with
the U. S. Army in Heilbronn, West Germany.
Capt. Charles W. Trimble of Versailles has arrived for duty at Camp New
Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The 14-15-year-old Babe Ruth All-Stars are district champions. The team
members are Greg Pope, Tony Montgomery, Todd Jarman, Ashley Davis, David
Greene, Jackie Roe, Darren Douglas, Chris Rodgers, Kevin O’Reel, Stephen
Franklin, Brent Huffman, Roger Kincaid, Glen Hartley, Jerry Turner, and
Rickie Ditmore.
