James “Buddy” K. Johnson, 92, husband of Gertrude Johnson, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2021.
He was born in Midway to the late J.K. and Katie Clark Johnson. He graduated from Midway High School in 1946 and received his BA from the University of Kentucky in 1956, his master’s degree in 1962 and his Rank I certification in 1966. Mr. Johnson served in the United States Air Force from 1950 until 1954, leaving the service with a rank of staff sergeant. He was a member of the Midway Lions Club and an elder at Midway Christian Church. He was also affiliated with the Association of Pupil Personnel Workers, both Central Kentucky and state chapters, and the Kentucky Association of School Administrators. Mr. Johnson loved woodworking and gardening, having constructed his own home in Midway.
In addition to his wife of 69 years, he will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Mary Beth (Derry) Kiger, Versailles; grandchildren, Edwin Rye, Lexington; Elizabeth (Michael) Woods, Versailles; and Doug McDaniel, Midway; and his great-grandchildren, Ella, Quinn and Gentry Woods, and Sara and Seth Coomer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Jo McDaniel; granddaughter, Katie McDaniel; and sisters, Marjorie Diamond and Lilly Mae Wright.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, Oct. 7, at Midway Cemetery. A gathering of family and friends will follow at Midway Christian Church.
