10 Years Ago October 20, 2011 An audit of Woodford County Public Schools’ financial statements for fiscal year 2011 showed no issues of noncompliance or problems with internal controls, according to a report given to the board of education on Monday night. Progress in the development of the Rubloff-owned Versailles Center property at Lexington Road and the U.S. 60 Bypass is still at a standstill. Kain Land Company, LLC wants to rezone 14.886 acres from B-3 to B-4 (highway business) and 13 acres from A-1 (agricultural) to B-4 in order to expand the Jack Kain Ford automobile dealership at 3395 Lexington Road. 25 Years Ago October 17, 1996 Laura Adams was honored last week as Woodford County High School’s 1996 homecoming queen. Her court consisted of senior Monica Combs, junior Whitney Glass, sophomore Rebecca Anderson, and freshman Kasi Egbert. The WCHS Yellow Jackets won the homecoming game, defeating Jessamine County 41-29. James B. Dobbins, 60, a retired sergeant with the Versailles Police Department and the department’s first black police officer, died Oct. 12. A $7.2555 million offer has been accepted for the Woodford County High School renovation and an additional project. The Versailles City Council has learned from an engineering report that fixing the Ridgewood area drainage woes could cost $100,000, or half of the amount budgeted to address drainage woes across the city. A spinal cord injury unit to open at Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital in Lexington will bear the name of the late William Owsley Rice, a longtime Versailles automobile dealer. The new wing was made possible through a $2.2 million bequest from Mr. Rice’s estate. Tom Greathouse of Midway has been named Distinguished Alumnus by the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. 40 Years Ago October 22, 1981 Meg Wallace was crowned Woodford County High School homecoming queen at halftime of the WCHS-Richmond Madison football game Friday night. Her attendants were Linda Moraja, senior; Lori Cecil, junior; Michelle Sizemore, sophomore; and Ellen Fouser, freshman. The Yellow Jackets won the homecoming game, 27-6 – their fifth straight win. The WCHS Band won first prize in an invitational competition during homecoming activities at Kentucky State University Saturday. The Woodford Board of Health is resisting efforts by the state to create health districts. Mr. and Mrs. Rick Horn returned last week from a two-week trip to England and France. The R.W. Lacefield home on the corner of Winter and Cross streets in Midway was sold at auction Saturday to Larry Wheeler of Lexington, a former Midway resident. The Lacefield lumber yard and building located on Bruen Street was sold to Dr. William F. Foley Jr., great-grandson of the original owner.
