Even if Sgt. Brent McGee doesn’t make a traffic stop while running radar, the 10-year-veteran of the Versailles Police Department said being visible helps deter speeding. McGee observes vehicles and leaves his radar on standby unless he sees someone who is obviously traveling at a high rate of speed, he said. He spoke to the Sun while running radar on Midway Road before traveling to U.S. 60 West (Frankfort Road), where he made a traffic stop. His advice to motorists when they are being pulled over on Midway Road (or other roadways without a shoulder) is for them to turn on their emergency lights and pull into a driveway. In all cases, roll your driver’s side window down and put your hands on the steering wheel. “If you can see their hands,” McGee said, “you know they’re cooperating, you know there’s not going to be an issue.” Although an officer must observe a traffic offense to issue a citation, McGee said motorists should inform police when they see a reckless driver because those calls have led to arrests for driving under the influence. “Who knows what was prevented because of that (those arrests)?” he asked.
