10 Years Ago October 28, 2010 Woodford County voters will face a hefty ballot of mostly local but also state and federal offices on Election Day, Nov. 2. For U.S. Senator, Republican Rand Paul is running against Democrat Jack Conway, Kentucky’s Attorney General. Incumbent Sixth District Democrat U.S. Rep. Ben Chandler faces Republican Andy Barr, and incumbent state Rep. Carl Rollins, a Democrat representing the 56th Representative District, facing Republican Lyen Crews. In the non-partisan race for Mayor of Versailles, incumbent Fred Siegelman is being challenged by council member Ann Miller. Christina Giles, a 2007 WCHS graduate, was crowned the 2010 Centre College Homecoming Queen. The Woodford County school board voted unanimously to accept a recommendation from Central Office administrators to amend the district’s budget for this school year to include a $624,120 federal Edujobs grant in its special revenue (grant) fund. Board members also agreed to schedule a special meeting to discuss how they want to spend Edujobs grant dollars. The board also approved project application documents seeking state approval to move forward with plans to install 77-inch intelligent – commonly known as “Smart” – boards in 25 classrooms as well as adding a mounted projector in two additional classrooms. Joyce and George Hedges of Versailles celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Oct. 1, 2010. 25 Years Ago October 26, 1995 Monroe Moosnick, Ph.D., of Lexington who grew up in Versailles and went on to a distinguished career at Transylvania University, died Sunday at the age of 76. Sarah Hall Nuckols, 69, co-owner of Hurstland Farm in Midway, died Oct. 21. A house at 111 Morgan Street in Versailles was razed Oct. 19 to make way for an expanded parking area behind City Hall and perhaps a small park. The city purchased the property from Ed and Inge Cunningham for $50,000. Woodford Fiscal Court approved the discontinuation of a portion of Riva Ridge Road in Derby Hills that would have connected it to a proposed adjacent subdivision. Stephen Barnett, a senior at Woodford County High School, has been selected the school’s “Youth Salute Leader of the Year.” Kara Ellen McDermott of Versailles received the Wayland Rhoads Memorial Scholarship from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture. The WCHS Yellow Jackets pounded Grant County 41-0 Friday night to clinch a spot in the Class AAA Region II playoffs. 40 Years Ago October 23, 1980 A moratorium on tap-ons to the South Main Street and High Street sewer lines has been extended for another year by the Woodford County Board of Health. Plans for expansion of the Versailles water treatment plant were terminated by the city council Tuesday night because of the council’s reluctance to accept a possible water and sewer rate hike of 60 percent. The Woodford County Schools’ Teacher of the Year is Geneva Johnson, a second-grade teacher at Versailles Elementary School. Grand jury reports of inspections of local government facilities are a thing of the past. A recent attorney general’s opinion says that grand juries are not required or authorized to inspect properties or facilities unless requested to do so based on some allegation of a possible criminal wrongdoing. Miss Lucille Finneran has returned from a trip to Ireland. She was accompanied by Mrs. James Finneran of Cleveland, Ohio. They visited Dublin, Limerick and Tralee. New officers of the Versailles Kiwanis Club are Art Craig, president; Robert W. Foley, vice president; Chess Nell, secretary; and William L. Phelps, treasurer. Midway Postmaster Jesse Ward retired Oct. 17 after 32 years in the postal service. He became postmaster on July 21, 1967. The Woodford County Yellow Jackets posted their third shutout of the season and their eighth straight victory in blanking Bourbon County 21-0 Friday night. Sixth-grade class officers at Mortonsville School are Deana Marsee, president; Melvin Drury, vice president; Katrina Schimmoeller, secretary, and Trent Thompson, treasurer.
